South Sudan National Bureau of Standards (SSNBS) commenced as Sudanese Standards and Metrology Organization (SSMO) in the Sudan. The SSMO was established through the Ministry of Cabinet Resolution No. 287 dated 1992, Presidential Decree issued on 10th November 1992 and National Assembly Resolution No. 68 dated 1993. It was housed too within the Ministry of Cabinet Affairs, Republic of the Sudan.
After independence of South Sudan on 9th July 2011, SSMO was transformed into Directorate of Standards and Grades within the then Ministry of Commerce, Supply & Trade. On March 2012, the President of the Republic signed SSNBS Act 2012, paving a way in establishing SSNBS as an independent scientific organization, responsible for standardization, quality assurance, and metrology and testing services in the Republic of South Sudan. SSNBS works closely with Ministry of Trade and Industry, Private Sector and other Governmental Departments to protect consumers, enhance safe and legitimate trade in the Republic of South Sudan and beyond.
